Akamai is a $300 million public company headquartered
in Cambridge, MA. If you use the Internet for anything -
to download music or software, check the headlines, book a flight - you've
probably used Akamai's services without even knowing it. Akamai's
technology - at its core, applied mathematics and algorithms - has transformed
the chaos of the Internet into a predictable, scalable, and secure platform for
business and entertainment. The Akamai EdgePlatform comprises 20,000 servers
deployed in 71 countries that continually monitor the Internet - traffic,
trouble spots and overall conditions. Akamai uses that information to
intelligently optimize routes and replicate content for faster, more reliable
delivery.
Akamai's San
Diego division focuses on the company's Stream OS
solution which ensures that media companies and content owners deliver media
flawlessly on the web. The content owners have a single point of control
for producing, publishing and delivering rich media, and essential reporting
tools with Akamai. The development environment for Stream OS is LAMP (Linux,
Apache, MySQL, and PHP).
In early 2006, the division was experiencing
explosive growth with clients such as Universal Music Group, EMI Music, the
NBA, the NHL and CBS Sportsline. Akamai then decided to augment its core
US team with an offshore team. VivánTech assigned a team of dedicated
developers and support personnel to the task. The VivánTech team for
Akamai consists of an onsite senior architect/PM, an offshore team leader and
five developers for a total of seven. The offshore team leader was
brought to Akamai for hands-on training for a month. He then returned to
VivánTech's India Office and trained the rest of the developers on the
internals of the Akamai's Stream OS software. The seven-people dedicated
team started helping the core US development team of Akamai with software development, as well as testing. The
activities have been taking place onshore and offshore with software
migrations, as well as technical support which is clearing support tickets by
fixing software issues or developing enhancements in Stream OS.
